Budget Message
Dear Millis Public Schools Community,
For several months the Strategic Budget Planning Committee, comprised of two School Committee members, two Finance Committee members, a Selectman, myself and the Town Manager, has been meeting to analyze the impending deficit in Millis due to a reduction in state funding of local aid to Massachusetts cities and towns and the loss of federal stimulus funding.
At the April 5th School Committee meeting and the April 6th Finance Committee meeting I presented information on the school district's proposed budget and Mr. Aspinwall and I presented the reductions we will have to make due to the deficit the town is facing. Last year the schools had to make $530,818 in cuts and this year, if an over-ride does not pass, we will be making an additional $559,149 in reductions which will impact our students.
These links provide you with details about those reductions as well as comparisons to other school districts' per pupil expenditures. We are very proud of the fact that the Millis Public Schools have been identified, by the Center for American Progress, as providing a very high "return on investment" due to our high student achievement with a low per pupil expenditure.
School Committee meetings are posted on our website. Please read the information provided. If you have any questions please contact me or the School Committee at schoolcommittee@millisps.org. Thank you for your support of the Millis Public Schools.
Respectfully, Nancy Gustafson
